BaatMesh Privacy Policy
Offline Bluetooth mesh messaging — no accounts, optional Area chat.
BaatMesh is an offline-first messaging app. Nearby phones talk over Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE). You do not create an account. You do not need a phone number or email to use the mesh.
This policy explains what data stays on your device, what other nearby users can see, and what happens if you turn on optional internet features.
1. Who we are
BaatMesh is published by:

2. No BaatMesh account
BaatMesh does not require:
- an account
- a phone number
- an email address
- a password
On first launch you choose a display nickname. That name is not verified. It is not a login.
3. What stays on your phone
BaatMesh stores on your device:
- your nickname
- cryptographic keys for your device identity and direct-message sessions
- local chat history (public mesh, direct messages, and Area chat if used)
- app settings (for example pause / relay preferences)
Wontonee does not run a BaatMesh cloud that receives your message contents, contact list, or exact GPS trail for the core mesh product.
4. How messaging works
Public mesh chat
Messages in the public mesh room are not end-to-end encrypted. Anyone nearby who runs BaatMesh — and phones that relay packets — can read them. The app states this in the UI. Use public mesh for coordination, not for secrets.
Direct messages (DMs)
Direct messages use a Noise-style encrypted session. Relaying phones forward ciphertext only. Relays cannot read DM plaintext. People in that DM thread can read it.
Voice notes and short videos
If you record voice or video in mesh chats, the media follows the same rules as text for that chat type (public = readable on the mesh; DM = encrypted for the thread). Mic and camera access are used on-device to capture media. BaatMesh does not upload that media to a Wontonee server as part of core mesh messaging.
Background relay
While mesh is not paused, your phone may discover nearby BaatMesh phones and relay packets for others. On Android this may use a persistent notification (“relaying”). Pause stops discovery, send, receive, and relay until you resume.
5. Optional Area chat (internet)
Area chat is optional and off by default.
If you turn it on, BaatMesh may:
- use coarse location (converted to a geohash / area cell, not shared as a precise street address in the product design)
- use the internet to reach a relay so people in the same area cell can exchange public Area messages when the Bluetooth mesh cannot reach them
Area chat messages on the relay are public for that location cell. Do not put secrets in Area chat.
You can turn Area chat off at any time. Core Bluetooth mesh chat does not require Area chat.
6. Permissions we ask for
Depending on your phone and OS version, BaatMesh may request:
| Permission | Why |
|---|---|
| Bluetooth / Nearby devices | Find nearby BaatMesh phones and exchange mesh packets |
| Location (when required by the OS or for Area chat) | On some Android versions, Bluetooth scanning historically needed location permission; Area chat uses coarse location for a geohash cell |
| Notifications | Show relay / message notices; Android foreground relay notification |
| Microphone | Record voice notes |
| Camera | Record short video clips |
| Internet | Optional Area chat / bridge only; mesh chat works offline with Bluetooth on |
BaatMesh does not need access to your phone contacts book for mesh messaging.
7. What nearby radios can observe
Even when message contents are encrypted (DMs), nearby Bluetooth observers may still see technical metadata such as timing, packet size, that BaatMesh traffic is present, and nicknames on public traffic. Public messages are readable as described above.
8. Emergency wipe
Wipe this phone erases nickname, keys, and local message history on that device. There is no recovery in the current version. After wipe, the app behaves like a new install with a new identity. Old direct-message sessions do not resume as the same identity.
9. Children
BaatMesh is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children through a BaatMesh account system, because there is no BaatMesh account. If you believe a child has used the app in a way that concerns you, contact us at the email below.
10. Third parties and stores
- App distribution uses Google Play and/or the Apple App Store. Those platforms have their own privacy policies.
- If you enable Area chat, messages and the coarse area cell are handled by the relay you configure / use for that feature — treat that traffic as public for the cell.
- Wontonee does not sell BaatMesh message contents.
11. Changes
We may update this policy when the app changes. The “Last updated” date at the top will change. Continued use of BaatMesh after an update means you accept the revised policy for that version of the app.
